Bagged where it bags, stacked where it does not

A yard pile loads fastest when it has been split by how it moves. Leaves, clippings and loose yard waste belong in bags, tied and set together. Brush and longer pieces go in a stack with the cut ends facing the same way, so they can be lifted instead of dragged across the lawn. Old planters, pots and broken outdoor furniture ride out in the same pass.

Watch for fasteners. Rotted deck boards, fence rails and old trellis pieces tend to have nails and screws still in them, and they are easy to miss under leaves. Wear gloves if you have to move them, and leave the sharp pieces for the crew.

The point is a deck and a yard you can use

A pile left against a shed or a railing holds water, hides the footing and gives you something to trip over on the way to the grill. Clearing it is less about the haul than about the afternoon you get back: a deck you can sit on, a path to the shed door, a corner of the yard you can look at without thinking about it.
